Dr. Ivan Kokanović, NEWFELPRO’s fellow in the outgoing scheme, has successfully concluded his project in December 2015. He spent twelve months at the University of Cambridge under the mentorship of Dr. Dr. Friedrich Malte Grosche (outgoing phase) and four months at the Faculty of Sciences in Zagreb (return phase) implementing his project „Specific Heat Capacity and Anisotropic Magnetic Properties of High Temperature Superconductors: YBa2Cu3O6+x and Tl2Ba2CuO6+x single crystals (CapMagHTS)“.

The primary goal was to investigate the existence of electron pockets in low magnetic fields caused by charge density (CDW) in the pure YBa2Cu3O6+x single crystals. He measured the specific heat and magnetisation in the doping range 0 < x < 1 to extract the total density of states at the Fermi level and thereby determine the number of pockets. Finally, a particular emphasis of the research was the further development of novel apparatus to measure the specific heat and magnetisation of small single crystals which are often of the highest quality.

Throughout his project, Dr. Kokanović attended the prestigious 12th International Conference on Magnetism in Barcelona and 11th International Conference on Research in High Magnetic Fields in Grenoble along with a workshop in Cambridge on Concepts and Discovery in Quantum Matter.

You can see Dr. Kokanović implementing his project in the NEWFELPRO's promo video:

To conclude, Dr. Kokanović is continuing to work at the the Faculty of Sciences in Zagreb and he will continue investigating the phenomena associated with the pairing mechanism responsible fro such unexpectedly high Tc and the origin of the quantum oscillation (QO) in the high temperature superconductors (HTSC) which is important for applications and the complex physics involved. He consdiers this to be very important for further development in the field of medical diagnostics and other high-magnetic-field devices where the usage of high temperature superconductors is already existing.

Congratulations!
